Check Dams and Ponds

As of March 2026, Aakar Charitable Trust has developed 840 check dams and 555 ponds across eleven Indian states, benefitting 19 lakh people living in 1,353 villages. The initiative generates INR 3,475 crore in net income and store 38 billion liters of water annually. Amla Ruia, Founder & Chairperson, explains that check dams are small structures that slow rainwater, create reservoirs, and enable sustained water flow, transforming barren areas into productive landscapes.

Kulhad Pavilion

As part of the Serendipity Arts Festival 2025, architectural firm Wallmakers created the Kulhad Pavilion using 18,000 terracotta cups collected from the local communities of Dharavi, Mumbai. Typically discarded along beaches and railway tracks, these kulhads highlight the scale of everyday waste. Spanning 1,025 sq. ft., the pavilion serves as a striking reminder of how such materials can be creatively reused, encouraging visitors to rethink waste and sustainability.

Teeter-totter Wall

Rael San Fratello, Oakland, installed three pink seesaws into the border wall separating the United States and Mexico for forty minutes, aiming to foster unity during highly politicized times. Working with Mexico’s Colectivo Chopeke, the team brought the seesaws to the site, with participants from both sides sliding the boards through the metal slats. The installation transformed the barrier into a shared, playful space symbolizing connection.

Bamboo Museum, Palampur

The Bamboo Museum at the Institute of Himalayan Bio-resource Technology (IHBT), Palampur, designed by Ar. S. D. Sharma, celebrates bamboo as both material and inspiration. Built primarily with bamboo, it creates an immersive, light-filled environment. The design follows modernist principles, featuring a disciplined structural grid and modular construction. Drawing from bamboo’s natural strength and flexibility, the museum showcases how traditional materials can be adapted into contemporary architectural expression.

Grand Egyptian Museum, Cairo

Dublin-based studio Heneghan Peng Architects has completed the long-awaited Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, more than three decades after the project was first announced. Spanning a 50,000-square-metre site near the Pyramids of Giza, the vast museum houses over 100,000 pharaonic antiquities. With a total floor area of 81,000 square metres, it is described by the architects as the largest museum in the world dedicated to a single civilisation.

Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya, New Delhi

Designed by Sikka Associates Architects in New Delhi, the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya is a  15,600 sq. meter museum dedicated to the Prime Ministers of India. Its design presents a compelling concept - India’s leaders shaping a rising form, much like a potter’s wheel, symbolizing the collective efforts of the people and visionary leadership in nation-building.  in shaping the nation.  The museum pays tribute to India’s evolution through a blend of architectural elements, structural innovation, and landscape design, offering a captivating visitor experience.
